Hair Salon for Women of Color

Guest Post written by my buddy Royce Heath

I used to work at a school in a clerical position.  My boss was an African American woman who i got along with really well.  Every week she would go to some hair salon and get her hair fixed.  She would come to school every week and fuss about how much it cost to get her hair fixed.  She would always tell me that when we got tired of working at the school, we should open a hair salon for women of color.  But she persisted in wanting to open a salon.  She finally retired from the school and told me it was time to open a shop.  I helped her on the side until it got going good.  We got our internet and phone from San Diego T1.  Then we hired a couple of hair dressers that she already knew.  Of course we had to get the chairs, mirrors, sinks and products.  Once we opened the business began to pour in.  I never would have believed it.  It became such a great income source that i was able to quit my job at the school and work full time in the salon.  I work on the business side only.  I still don't know how to fix hair, but apparently that did not matter.
