Mommylogues: Naming Our Baby!

Good Monday Morning Friends!!!
Hope everyone had an awesome weekend!
It's raining on this side of the world so i am singing:
"rain rain go away...come back another day even though you are good for my sinuses!"

Onto Mommylogues Monday!
One of the most daunting tasks at hand during pregnancy is naming our baby.
And there are hundreds of baby name websites, books and apps to help you name your baby.
My niece, bless her heart, has the app on her iphone to help come up with names for the baby.
Last night, we were going over the names and there were like a million names to choose from.

Of course in blogsphere coming up with Baby Pancakes' name was natural
but calling our little one Baby Pancakes is just not going to cut it...
plus our families and friends may look at us cross eyed with confusion.

How do we choose a name for our baby?
Do we name him after Mr. Pancakes?
Do we name him after my dad since Mr. Pancakes is already named after his dad?
Does he become a Junior Junior?
Do we name him after someone famous?
Someone we admire?
A biblical name?
A name i have always liked?
Remember Charlotte of SATC and Monica of Friends,
had picked out a name for her future baby.
A made up name? Like Apple of our eye?!
A combination of our names?

Clearly, there are so many options to choosing the right name.
But it's not just choosing a name, it's choosing a name that has meaning.
A name that is strong and powerful which will carry him through his life.
A name that will not discriminate but instead give him opportunities beyond this world.
And for Team Pancakes it will come down to choosing a name that are all that
and "biblical" and "family oriented".

The family name will be after my dad and it will become his middle name.
We have decided once we have a first name to keep it between us
until we finally meet and share his name with him for the first time.
I remember calling out my godson's name during delivery
and the doctor and nurses encouraging him to enter into this world
by his name and that i thought was a special moment!!
There is something magical about calling your baby by his name as he enters this world.

I can't wait to meet Baby Pancakes by calling out his name as he enters into this world!
It's definitely a daunting task but one that we are proud to do
because giving him a name is one of the first and most important responsibilities we have as parents!!

Question of the Day:
How did you choose your baby's name?
Did you keep it until the baby was born?

  2. We actually heard Elyse while watching a movie and both fell in love with it...and then the task of deciding how to spell it! ughh! picking a name is such an important task!

We did not keep it secret, we told everyone as soon as we decided because our baby girl had already been given several nick names and we wanted her to be called by her real name as soon as possible!

  3. We picked out names early and made them public after we knew the sex. It was important to us to have people praying for our sons by name before they were even born!

    Blessings to you all,
    Alida

  5. I had my daughters name since I was little. I did not want to name my son after his dad because I like my kids to have their own identity but my hubs named my son and I named the girl. Good luck

  6. Finding my daughters' name was easy. I already had the first ones name before I became pregnant and I did a web search for the second one and the first name I like I stopped looking. Good luck with finding the right name for you all.

  8. Once we found out the sex we started looking at names. We decided on a name at 16 weeks. I really wanted to call him by his name when talking to him. I used a book, online tools, tv lol everything. John and I could not come to an agreement. Then....we found THE ONE! It's an old sanskrit name, has a great meaning, and is not popular at all. We LOVE it.
I gave John the middle name duties, but I get middle name duty for next baby :)

  9. It is a big decision! We like biblical and family names too! Is it crazy that we already have a bunch picked out and we're not even close to that point?! Hahaha!

  10. The first baby was hard to name. I wanted to choose something that was short, strong, and meaningful. We didn't decide until I was 8 months along. We chose Jada. Its simple and strong. It means the one who knows....and boy is she a know it all! Her middle name is my grandma's name. We chose Jordan for the 2nd baby. It's also a strong name. The last baby, we chose Joy, another short, strong, and meaningful name. She lives up to her name! If we have a boy it will definitely be a jr.!

  17. We had a list of names from when we were first married. We held on to it and referred back when it was time to make a choice. Some names we no longer liked but were able to modify one of the names and make it work. For middle name we used a family name.
It is tough but I am sure you will pick something great. We didn't keep the name secret and it was nice because people referred to him by name.

  18. My daughter's name has been chosen since before she was born. She's named after Zoe Kravitz because I love her!

My husband picked out her middle name, Noelle, from movie credits.

  19. I had always wanted to name my daughter Sloan but with my last name Agbai, I then decided it sounded funny. Instead we chose a family name, Virginia, because me and my husband's distinct names (Quiana and Uka) we wanted our child to have a classic name that could have a hip nickname depending on what her career path is - hence her nickname is Nia (my mother wanted it to be Ginny but we thought it was corny). We had more challenges over her middle name (Adnanna) due to the Nigerian tradition (my husband is Nigerian-American), but that's a whole other story!

  20. eeeek! picking a name is so much fun! i already had names picked out for a boy or a girl when i was pregnant. i've been writing down names i liked for a long time. so really...i picked the first name and hubby picked the middle (using someone's name in the family). so for Marcus we used one of his brother's name as a middle name. Marcus Benjamin. :) The gender was a surprise for us so we didn't keep the names a secret. How exciting!!!

  21. I went biblical for both children. I think the best piece of advice I got when choosing names was choose a name not for a cute baby but for a successful adult.
