The No-TV Challenge

Starting August 16th, 2011, I have decided to give up television for a complete week.
7 full days.
168 hours.
No television!
I have been meaning to do this for a while because truth be told, i watch TV, alot.
As soon as i come home, i turn the TV on.  I watch TV when i am blogging, stretching from a workout, eating, texting and sometimes when i am sleeping.  Well the TV has to be on when i am sleeping (if Mr. Pancakes is not home that is).  I have become a little attached to the TV.

Mr. Pancakes on the other hand could care less about TV unless there is a football or another sporting event on.  If not, the TV is turned off.  Sometimes, i come home, turn the TV on and it's on the same channel from when i last watched TV.  I think God brought Mr. Pancakes into my life to teach me some self-discipline.

Therefore I have decided be self-disciplined and challenge myself to No-TV!
Oh the horror!

As soon as i thought about this challenge, i said to myself,
"self, i am sure there are plenty of things you can do aside from watching television!"  Including:

 house cleaning,
go to a baseball game,
working out in the evening,
expanding on our readership at TC30s
trying new hair styles,
finish reading the books that are due back at the library next week,
catch up with friends from Canada,
skype with my sister,
trying new recipes from Fitness Food and Fait
write in my journal,
discover new blogs,
helping Mr. Pancakes with the family business
studying for my clinical exam in October
learn about doing a giveaway,
have a random date night at our favourite restaurant
spend quality evening time with Mr. Pancakes with the TV turned off.

Of course, i was ready to start the No-TV challenge next week but of course my self-disciplined husband says to me, "why put off what you can today tomorrow?"  I looked at him and thought about all the new shows i could be missing and took him up on the challenge to start on August 16 and finish on August 23rd.

What's the point of this challenge anyway?
Aside from showing myself and my husband i can be self-disciplined,
i believe i am a little addicted to the TV and spending sometime away from it will give me a better appreciation for all the other lovely things i enjoy doing,
like reading, working out, journaling and spending time the Pancakes.

I am hopeful if i can be disciplined with the No-TV challenge, i can be disciplined in other areas of my life.  Here's to being optimistic without television for a week and discovering something new and awesome in the next week.

I just hope i don't accidentally turn it on!

Have you given up something you really really really liked for an extended amount of time?

I wish Mr. Sophia Chang were the same way! He likes the white noise of TV and I can't stand it. I've lived without television many years. Unfortunately when I have it I keep up with toooo many shows.

Thanks for the bday wishes!

I think I gave up tv once before. I heard somewhere that if you do it for 30 days then you will not need it anymore..or maybe it was 7? I can't remember.
It's a lot easier to do than you think and we always have the tv on too. I like the noise.

Okay this might sound crazy to you, but we don't even own a t.v! We do watch some shows on hulu, but just never got around to buying one. Hope you stay strong next week.

Wow what a challenge!!! I know you can do it! I do watch tv but only certain shows. So if I did have to give up on tv i think i would still have to turn it on for my shows...hahaha that's not really giving up is it? I'm more addicted to the computer than I am the tv. O_o I should challenge myself to stay off the computer. It's so bad...all I do is PIN! Well can't wait to hear about all the things you got done without the TV! Good luck! :)

just cruising by to say hi and I'm glad I did! my mom actually did this this year for Lent. She said it was just amazing. I try to do this at least every once in awhile, and a lot of the times the tv is only on during designated "mommy breaks" in my house!! Its hard with a hubby that tends to be gone a lot! But I love that its not hard for me to do. I can actually be self-disciplined...who would have thunk it?! LOL!

good luck chica!

I don't watch tv that much. I have a few shows that I consistently watch but I am fine with the TV being off. Now a week without my laptop, I might go crazy!
I look forward to seeing how this works for you. It is a good idea to self discipline. You got me thinking.....

Good luck! I did this a few months ago with my morning television and listed to Christian music instead. I'm thinking I should do this again very soon!

I think it's great that you are doing this! I too think of all the time I waste while watching TV and I don't like it. I try to limit shows I watch to cut down but it's probably still more then I want. Good luck.

I don't have a TV in my flat and it saves me money cos I'm not paying for TV licence. When I watch TV, I have to munch on something, so I gain weight. I'm having none of that again!

Goodluck dearie xxx

You just encouraged me to turn my TV off so I can start this work thats due tonight. I too get preoccupied with watching too much TV. I actually did the No-TV challenge a while back and it helped get me focused. Good luck.

WOW! Make sure you give us an update on how this went! I would be completely challenged with this. Just as you mentioned, my husband is not really into tv either!
