HGTV...you've disappointed me!

Hello Thursday...thanks ladies for supporting me yesterday...it was a lot of fun!
Now onto today's post...

There is a new show on HGTV about individuals looking
to purchase a home with the support of their families.
My House, Your Money.

I don't necessarily have an issue with parents helping their children to purchase homes.
I mean truth be told, i purchased a condo a few years ago with the support of family.
However another truth be told, i was able to make ALL the decisions on my own without any interference from my family.  It was an investment...which was not such an investment because we barely broke even during the sale of the condo.  But nevertheless, i was in control of the decision making.

Now i know in my situation, we were NOT on a reality tv and we weren't trying to get ratings
and therefore the show may be edited to be more sensationalized.
But honestly HGTV you've disappointed me!

And here's why:

The "child" was..
*31 years-old
*'starving' medical student (starving part bothered me--if you are starving, you can't afford a house)
*no current income (at least they didn't say what he was doing)
*hundreds of thousands debt in student loans
*he actually had to ask his mom: "can you let me get a word in? you never let me  talk."

The parents..
*still treated the grown-a** son like a child
*mother was too overbearing
*close to retirement age

I was MOST disappointed because with all the crazy housing issues around,
how can HGTV encourage a show that would allow families to:
*borrow on their existing mortgage to give money to their child
*"child" to purchase homes when they don't have a down payment of their own
*a house is NOT necessarily the best kind of investment (personal experience!)
*encourage the infantilizational of grown adults (is that even a word?)
*parents kept on complaining about HIS driving--i know i know that's part of the reality tv thing!

But seriously HGTV...you've disappointed me because..

whenever someone GIVES you money, they OWN you.
Can you say credit cards?
The borrower is really the slave to the lender...that's a Dave Ramsey-ism however it's true.

Anywho...
the parents had way too much control over his decision because as the show's title reveals...it's
Your House, Their Money..but really it's their money, their house!

Anyway..this was a rant and not meant to negate anything anyone and their families are doing!
Just a review on the new show on HGTV...
I will be sticking to, "House Hunters", "My First Place" & "Property Virgins".

Have you seen the show?
What's your fav. HGTV show?

Haven't seen the show so I can't speak on the show. But...have worked for a bank and can say that the story that you mentioned above happens all to often in the purchasing of both car and homes. I've seen endless arguments in the bank between parents and children as they go over details because the parents are putting the down payment for their kids on a home.
With regards to the sensationalizm let's face it, thats what most tv shows are about now. Again I haven't seen the show but your depiction of it just didn't fall too far from what I've seen in real life.
I rarely get to watch HGTV or even tv for that matter but once in a while I'll catch House Hunters International and I love watching that.....the regular house hunters not so much.

Never seen nor heard of this show but Id probably be rolling my eyes in annoyance if I caught that episode. I see nothing wrong with parents helping their child get a home, and yes at 31 my son or daughter will still be my child. However, I'd never borrow against my mortgage or give a down payment or cosignature to a child who was not in the position to help themself as well. The kid's a medical student you said though, so, he wont be broke and in debt for long.

It is tough to watch some shows on TV. I haven't seen this one, but I don't think I'll be running to see it either.
Your child will always be your child, but you do need to teach them to stand and be an adult. If you are going to invest in them, trust them to make the decisions.

so i watched that and to be honest i laughed a few times. actually i laughed a lot of times! it was kinda funny to me. not that i take pleasure in seeing a grown man act like a little child but because the whole situation was kind of hilarious.

but now that you mention it, it is a bit questionable that HGTV would create this show ... but i guess ridiculousness brings ratings and ratings brings money and money makes the world go round.

i'll probably watch it next week just because i don't mind laughing out loud at certain things.

but my go to shows will still be:
House Hunters
My First Place
Property Virgins
My First Renovation
Designed to Sell
The Unsellables
The High Low Project
Design on a Dime

I am actually enjoying Property Brothers and Kitchen Cousins too.

as you can see, I watch a lot of HGTV, haha.

I want to watch it just to see what it's like but I agree... although I'm okay with the parents helping (I know mine probably would) I also think that it sounds like "I'm giving you money so I'm making all the decisions." It's dumb.

ughhh...that really does sound like a horrible idea given the current economic condition!

we love house hunters & property virgins!

Sounds totally lame. I don't really watch any of the shows on HGTV, mostly because I don't have time!

Ugh, I don't like stories like this! It's just silly to treat grown adults like kids.

Ugh. No, I'm not familiar with this show and surely will not tune in. I love HGTV. Favorites are Curb Appeal, Next HGTV Design Star, Candice Olsen and House Hunters.

I saw a preview for it but decided not to watch it. I still enjoy House hunters the best with Property Virgins (no new ones in a while ) and My First Place second and third.

When I saw the preview I knew I wouldn't be partaking of this one.. If it's the same Mom for the preview commercial I already wanted to slap her. NOPE, can't watch it.. I DO love HGTV though, my go to shows are:

House Hunters
Property Virgins
Designed to Sell (LOVE!)
Design on a Dime (LOVE LOVE!)
Property Brothers
Kitchen Cousins
Sarah's House (not been on lately)
Holmes on Homes
Holmes Inspection
Curb Appeal

Damn I watch too much HGTV! LOL

I haven't seen this new show since I sadly have no TV of my own. However, when I get a chance for some TV, my fallback shows to put on on HGTV are Property Virgins, House Hunters, and My First Place.

I haven't seen the show, but I would like shows that helps people buying houses abroad, home decorating, building house from scratch...

I am into property development and one day I hope to get my own house built from scratch and those shows are fun to watch. I watch British versions.

yeah I won't be watching that show... I couldn't imagine someone else buying me a house and them make the decisions... no thank you!

I.Love.Dave.Ramsey! I haven't seen the show, but the way you talked about it was pretty funny. Buying a house with no income and mommy's help in a jacked up housing situation. Wow! Glad you called BS on this! I sure hope there won't be any future 'clients' in that same situation on the show.

I haven't watched this (or heard of it) but it doesn't sound like something I'd watch. We've been doing really well on our own, and no debt at all. I mean things really only go on our credit card in an emergency and only for 48 hours before we clear it. I imagine we're just going to work really hard to have our own home on our terms :)

I have never heard of this show!! I may have to give it a shot now that you mentioned how crazy it is!

I saw that episode and I was totally confused. How was he supposed to afford the mortgage if he was a "starving" student? And they seriously need to cut the umbilical cord. He is a grown ass man!!!

I haven't seen the show and I won't be watching.
Just started listening to Dave Ramsey and he says a lot of smart things.

Me and my mom used to *love* watching anything HGTV but over the years they've jumped on the little reality based program bandwagon a bit too hard. I havent heard of the show you mentioned bc I, too, only stick to house hunters and property virgins. Everything else is a bit ridiculous..

I love HGTV and I watch it yesterday too. I wasn't interested in this series at all, and the reason why it wasn't exciting. It was quite boring and the mother was getting on my nerves lol. My favorite shows are My First Place, Property Virgins, House Hunters, Selling L.A., and Color Splash.

I like house hunters but I was not to sure about this show.

omg I love HGTV but I haven't seen this show...that is crazy though...how is this 31 year old "child" going to grow up if he can't do anything for himself? His parents are definitely to blame.

My fav HGTV shows are:

House Hunters International (i always dream of searching for a vacation home somewhere tropical or in Italy...*sigh*)

House Hunters (just cuz I like watching people tour different homes and styles. Its like walking through an open house on your tv. lol)

Urban Suburban (i think its a Canadian one though...not sure if its in the States. the hosts are brother and sister and so hilarious and they compete to see if the home owner will pick Urban/Brother or Suburban/Sister--great show!)

Income Property (i wish Scott McGillivray could come and finish up my basement!!!!)

Oh and I like Property Virgins too!

Omg, I wrote so much...sorry! lol

Btw, here's my email: yeantem@gmailcom

I thought about it after like why am i trying to hide my email address when i have a blog and sharing my whole life on the web? :P

ok i'm really going this time. :)

Ciao!

I don't watch HGTV at all but I can definitely understand what you are saying. He who has the most money laughs the loudest..and I hate using money as a form of power.

When I first saw the previews, I thought the same thing. The kids and parents all sounded too spoiled or too overbearing. No thank you!
