Mommylogues: Patterns of Genetic Inheritance

So we are 7 weeks away from meeting Baby Pancakes.
Someone please pinch me...i can't believe we are so close...
God is amazing!
The fact that he has taken this little Pancake embryo
and grown it into an almost 4lbs human...
I can't even phantom but it's happening.
God is sooo good!

One of the things i have been wondering about as Baby Pancakes' due date arrives is:
Who Will He Resemble?
The genetic code...how it all works is pretty terrific!!

Did you know that: DNA is shuffled randomly from one generation to the next?

It amazes me how the combination of our genes
have come together to create this little human.
And which parts of our features and personalities he will inherit
as a result of our genes combining...
is all mind boggling to me if you think about it.
I am a firm believer that we are all products of genetics and our environment.
Nature vs. Nurture...more like Nature & Nurture!

Lately, i have taken note of how kids resemble their parents,
not only in their features but their mannerisms...
have you ever seen parents and their kids together?
This weekend, i noticed how many similarities my mom
and i shared including features but our personalities...
we are both task oriented and inquisitive to a fault!
Additionally, she spoke about her experiences when she was pregnant
and how she shares similarities.
The genetics game is that deep y'all!

I found this neat table if you are ever wondering the origins of Character Traits:
Environmental:
Specific Language (entirely)
Specific Religion (entirely)
Specific culture (entirely)
Sensitivity to environment-based stresses like radiation (mostly environmental)
Interactional:
Height
Weight
Intelligence
Personality
Certain multifactorial diseases like heart disease
Genetics:
Blood group (entirely)
Eye color (entirely)
Hair Color (entirely)
Certain genetic diseases, such as Huntingdon's (entirely)
Baldness (mostly genetic)

The above chart is pretty interesting and has me wondering about Baby Pancakes
and what he is going to inherit from our genes?
I know nature will play into the type of little man he becomes.
But i thought it would be fun to think about his features
and personality in relation to our own...

First of all, i hope he is a healthy little guy.
And then i hope Mr. Pancakes' dominate height gene and my dominate height gene
(if i have one, i am 5'2) come together to help him grow tall.
I hope he has a nice physical build (Mr. Pancakes' has an athletic build).
I hope he gets his father's dimples and smile.
But then i have a pretty nice smile too.
I hope he gets my ears because it's nicely shaped.
I hope he inherits both of our intelligence and compassion for people.
I hope he inherits my spirit for adventure and his father's no-fear attitude.
I hope he develops a God-loving heart and willingness to learn about God!
I hope above all his genetic code and make-up is infused with love, laughter and kindness!!!
I know he will inherit his daddy's baldness and that's great:-)
But then again...what ever patterns of genes inheritance Baby Pancakes inherits...
he will be loved and loved and loved and loved...all over all the time!!

33 Weeks!

Time is winding down fast. My son is short I am 5'2 also but my daughter is tall and her dad is 5'11 so I guess my son has my genes and the baby has his genes.

i can't believe Baby Pancakes will be here in 7 weeks! you look fabulous!

And I think it's been interesting to watch Elyse...as far as looks go, she seems to be the perfect combination of both Hubby & I!

Eeeek! 7 weeks! I am so excited for you! That's a very interesting chart you posted! Genetics is crazy sometimes! My sister has 2 boys...one is very dark skinned and dark eyes like her (we are half filipino). The other one is blond hair, light skinned and blue eyes! They look nothing alike! I'm always so curious to know if our baby #2 (whenever that happens) will look like Ellie at all or not! :-)

How exciting that you get to meet your son soon! We've still got halfway to go. I find myself wondering all the time what our little girl will be like. Who will she look like? What personality traits will she inherit from us? I'm just so curious! I'm so excited to meet our baby girl.

Congrats to you and Mr. Pancakes!

Goodness how time flies. It feels like just yesterday that I was congratulating you when you first shared the news here and now you're so close to meeting your little one! Thinking of you xoxox

Your baby bump is so cute! Whomever baby boy looks like I am sure he will be loved! Before Abby was born my husband and I made guesses as to what she would look like. Hubby actually did a pretty good job because she looks just like he described. I was the one that was way off :) Regardless we love her to bits and pieces and can't wait to see what her personality will end up being.

7 weeks. It is almost time! I laways wondered how the kids would look and act when I was pregnant. It is crazy how a baby can look like some one down the line also. My first and last look just like my husband and act like me. The middle child look like my little sister and mom.

congratulations to you and your husband!! I hope you have a healthy, happy baby boy :)

Congratulations...baby pancakes will be here soon! Everyone says that my son looks nothing like me and that he's my husbands twin. However, there are times when I look at my son and he looks like other family members like my nephew or my husband's brother. I guess whenever we have baby #2 maybe that one will have some of my features.

Hey due date buddy, 7 weeks to go eh, how crazy right. We have a not to exceed date too and it's 6 weeks away....AHHHHHH, it's crazy we will be holding our babies so soon.

We got lucky in the genes department, my son is such a great combination of the both of us looks and personality. We both see ourselves in him and it's the best feeling ever. I wonder what my next boy will be like. Either way I hope he and his brother are best friends.

Now if I have a girl, I hope she is a spitting image of me. I look exactly like my mom and that is just way cool

This is so sweet! One of the high school science teachers at my old job said that children have 52% of their mom's genes and 48% of their dads so even if he doesn't look a thing like you he still carries more of your genes! It'll be interesting to see what he's like. You look great...thanks for sharing a baby bump photo
