Falling In Love with Baby Series: Quiana

9 Go Team Pancakes!

Falling in Love with My Baby
By Quiana Agbai, Harlem Love Birds

When I first saw the title of this guest-post series I thought of my other baby –

my husband and the harsh reality of displacement
that often happens when a newborn arrives.
I have to admit, I gave my husband a very hard time
during those first few post-partum weeks.
Thinking back on it I cringe.
I seriously felt like a mama bear ready to
attack anyone at moment’s notice and since
he was in close proximity he received the brunt of my fury.

I instantly felt a bond with Nia, my now 2 year old daughter,
when she was born and yes, I loved her
but I definitely waned in the feeling of “being in love” at times
during my recovery from my 4th degree tear
and frustration with learning how to breastfeed.

Falling in love with my baby and falling in love
with my husband definitely had similarities
and I often wonder if we were all in love
with each other at some point.
I imagine our ships of love passing each other.
As my father told me with romantic love and relationships,
a couple is rarely on the same percentage level of love
and contribution to the partnership at any given time
.

I see this truth being played out even now with my baby especially.
As her personality developed and she moved
from being a little blob (and I mean that in an endearing way!)
to having a full blown personality and reminding me of myself in the process,
I’ve found myself falling in love with her and the little person she’s becoming.
And isn’t that our goal in parenthood - to help our children reach adulthood successfully?

When I see glimpses of myself in her and quirks
that make me thinks she’s bit crazy (but always cute)
I feel an overwhelming sense of love for her – actually being in love with her.
I say to myself, “Nia is going to be one special woman someday!”
I may not like her tomorrow when she has a rough time
as we’re  presently undergoing potty training
or I trip over her spilled blocks for the umpteenth time
although I told her to put them away, but I do know
that I am in a continual ebb and flow of falling in (and out of) love with my baby.

Falling In Love with Your Baby Series: LaTorsha

12 Go Team Pancakes!

I am excited to introduce Falling In Love with Baby Series.

I believe there is no other time in our lives as women
where falling in love is instantaneous than the love we feel
when we meet our baby for the first time.
Of course...sometimes falling in love with our baby
is NOT so instantaneous and we have to work at it.
But the best part of falling in love is knowing that this kind of love is magic!
It is unconditional and pure...
it is experienced between a mother and her baby...
And it is beautiful....
i didn't understand that until i had
Baby Pancakes and i wanted other mothers to share
with me their thoughts and experiences on Falling In Love with their Baby...
I hope you fall in love with their stories as much as i did...

A Love I NEVER Knew

You hear about it.

You read about it.

You see it from afar.

Yet, you never know the love that you possess deep down on the inside
until you birth a life for yourself.  In an instant, you go from being the number
one person in your own life to a distant runner up.  No more just living it up for you.
No more wondering aimlessly without a specific purpose of how the days may go.
Life has been somewhat planned for the next 18 years or so.

BUT yet, it is a precious love that surpasses all others.
Yes, even that between a man and a wife cannot compete
between the bond of a mother and child. Unconditional love is what I’m talking about.

The type of love that makes you stay up all night laying on the floor beside a crib,
because you want to be there to comfort a cough, fever, toothaches, and even a scary nightmare.
This love I never knew has caused me to do things I never knew I could.
It is like I have the strength and senses of superwoman when I sense something is wrong.
I can stretch a dollar a mile long to ensure his needs are met.
And when I say stretch a dollar, I mean give up things that used to stand for so much to me.

This love has made me laugh, smile, cry, and at times scream!!

A love I NEVER knew.

First words.

Potty training.

Learning to walk.

Singing the alphabet.

Counting to 10.

Heading to preschool.

The list can never be complete of the MANY, MANY milestones that a child will meet.
To some the memories will fade, or it will just be a note in a doctor’s chart,
or just another event that takes place in the lives of all children.

BUT in the heart of a mother, each moment leaves a mark
on her heart that is forever engraved and wrapped in unconditional love.

This love I NEVER knew until I became a mom. And that day changed my life…………
for the better.

Best wishes Mrs Pancakes as you enter into motherhood.
It is life changing, but very rewarding.
I pray you embrace the unconditional love that is waiting for you.
